Properties of Living Structures
Examples include fractals, symmetries, curves, gradients, echoes. The works of Christopher Alexander starts to uncover them.
They are timeless, because they come from nature. They make us feel more connected to the universe.
The architecture of the future will embody these properties, just as the architecture of the past did.
When Function Follows Form
Function and form both follow each other. But the most beautiful and wholesome places we experience are those where form doesn't just accommodate, but also inspires and elevates function.
Living Structures
The quality of being alive is not exclusive to organisms. Objects, rooms, buildings, streets, cities can be alive. Most of modern architecture struggles to become alive, for various reasons. In worst cases, it can even kill. This issue might seem trivial or purely aesthetic. Yet it affects all of us in subconcious ways. Bad architecture and planning makes us less healthy, physically and mentally.
Make Catalunya Great Again
Rarely something beautiful happens and it comes back to life through a structure-preserving transformation. This is how every city used to evolve until modern times. It's one of the reasons old cities are more harmonious. It's a process that requires more attention, but not always more money.
There are traditions that should be demolished and replaced. This is not one of them.
Studies for an Organic Villa
Drawing by hand involves a more fluid, intuitive process. It is more natural to draw curves, intricate details, imperfections, materiality and vegetation. Traditional construction methods are also more intuitive, responding to the conditions on-site. By contrast CAD and modern construction allow for precision and speed, incentivizing mechanic repetition.
Generative technologies have the potential to help us reintroduce some of the contextual and humanistic sensibilities that we don’t see enough in contemporary architecture.
